New York City has the worst gender disparity of women firefighters out of all the major fire departments in the United States. The United Women Firefighters has been hard at work to change this abysmal statistic since 1982, when the first women firefighters broke the barrier and entered the FDNY. On our 35th anniversary, we are on the precipice of making huge changes and hiring more women firefighters than ever before. But we can only do this with your support...

The United Women Firefighters is built upon women helping other women. We are a small group of women firefighters who are passionate about making big changes in the FDNY. We have a shoestring budget and our program is 100% reliant on donations! Whatever money that you can pledge will go very far for us!

We run a training program to help women pass their physical test and the arduous fire academy so that they can become firefighters. In this training program, women candidates learn from women firefighters on how to effectively train and navigate through the process of becoming a firefighter. They also train on real firefighting equipment and real firefighting gear so they can be best set up for success.

In 2017 the most women in history filed for the FDNY firefighter exam at about 8,700 candidates, which is amazing because we can seriously transform the gender balance within the FDNY. While we are excited by these great numbers, we are suddenly overwhelmed with the huge increase of new women coming through our doors. We need your generous support now to grow our program to accommodate this huge uptick and ignite the next generation of women firefighters.

To be effective in reaching these women and increasing our numbers we need to:

  • Purchase new equipment
  • Increase our staffing
  •  Make online content for women who cannot physically make our program consistently

We have an incredible track record. This iteration of our training program has been in action since 2013 and we've been largely responsible for doubling the number of women firefighters in the FDNY to 63...which will soon be 67 by the next fire academy graduation on October 18th. Our next milestone is 100 women which will be close to 1% of the FDNY. Right now, we have the most women firefighters to EVER serve in NYC, largely from our efforts from our training program!

The women who've attended our program have gotten stronger, faster and better prepared for the firefighter exam and fire academy. Our program is 100% free to our women candidates so that women from all walks of life can come through our doors and focus on getting this amazing and transformative career. We do all this in an all women, supportive environment. Women helping women.

We've garnered a lot of attention over the years with news coverage by the Associated Press, Daily News, Fox News, The Chief Leader, Newsday, AM News, Village Voice and much more! Check out our program in action with our most recent article from Jezebel:
